POSITION PURPOSE This position will be responsible for a variety of software engineering and maintenance functions including: analyzing process performance, evaluating necessary process changes, managing the implementation of process improvements and reporting process performance.
This position will be responsible to ensure continuity of the Level 2 systems through cross training and developing Level 2 engineers as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Manage Supervisory Computer Systems (Level 2) • System Management • Monitor and tune application and system processes • Manage system resources and logging systems • Analyse contents of system logs • Engineer and manage new capital projects to upgrade or replace obsolete electrical equipment • Network Management • Configure networking equipment • Design and configure networking topologies • Specify networking equipment • Install and test networking equipment • Hardware Management • Perform time-based maintenance • Isolate and replace field components • Interface cabling with I/O devices • Various hardware platforms, Alpha, NEC, HP products.
• Software Management • Monitor applications for correct processing • Back-up computer operating systems and applications on various platforms • Analyse and troubleshoot operating system and application software • Perform maintenance programming • Configure system and application software (Visual Sharp, C, C++) • Plan, design, develop, implement and maintain HMI applications (WonderWare) • Document Management • Generate historical documentation • Author “help” documents • Reverse engineer software specifications • Maintain listings of hardware and software • Perform the maintenance responsibilities for programming and software support to for Level 2 process control systems in the absence of regularly assigned personnel • Support Operations • Respond to Operator requests and problems • Participate in meetings relating to product quality • Provide training on new software, system updates and control enhancements • Provide expert advice, system troubleshooting and direct hands-on support to the Maintenance and Operating Superintendents for the following specific functional areas and equipment types while ensuring compliance with established specifications and industrial standards: • Reheat Furnace, Rolling Mill, and Finishing Department process control systems • Other equipment that provides specialized man-machine interfaces, networking to business systems, connections to supplier networks and information flow to intra-net communications • Provide Process and System Root-Cause Analysis • Provide problem solving related to processing a product through the plant • Provide problem solving related to application code problems • Provide problem solving from an overall system perspective • Provide corrective action • Define problem • Develop Action Plan • Manage, coordinate and implement Action Plan • Communicate and Interface with other departments and project participants • Participate in Project Teams • Participate in team decision-making • Work in team environment as a resource • Facilitate team meetings, as required • Provide planning from initial project request to Action Plan • Contribute to the design and development of hardware and software specifications • Participate or take leadership role in the implementation of the Action Plan • Participate in system-wide problem resolution • Coordinate Contractor Involvement • Provide scope and direction of contracted work • Provide direct supervision of contract workers QUALIFICATIONS Competencies and Experience Required: • Minimum of 5 years of experience programming industrial process control systems • Possess the knowledge of process interactions between control layers and physical processes in a steel plate manufacturing facility • Exercise sound engineering and economic judgement and discretion with regard to process control decision-making • Equipment and process knowledge including industrial control computer processors, multi-tasking operating systems, real time communications systems, programmable logic controllers, manufacturing concepts and the ability to integrate them into a working process control system • Mathematical concepts supporting closed-loop real-time manufacturing controls • Good problem solving, organizational and communication skills, both oral and written • Capable of working effectively with minimal direction or supervision Preferred: • Experience working with Ethernet and real time communications systems, TPL for Level 2 Data communications, TCP/IP networking.
• Knowledge of various PC operating systems • Previous experience in troubleshooting industrial electrical and electronic systems • Formal training in computer hardware/software from manufacturers or suppliers • Certifications in computer skills such as database management, networking, specialized languages or software suites • Programing languages: C, C++, C#, Fortran and C VMS system • Oracle and Microsoft SQL database experience • SCADA Programming Experience (i.
