Responsibilities: The Respiratory Therapy Assistant is responsible for performing duties which assist respiratory therapists, including but not limited to 12-lead-EKGs and rhythm strips, assembly, transport and disinfection, calibration and troubleshooting of EGK and respiratory related equipment; the RTA works under the direction of a Respiratory Therapist; The Respiratory Therapist Assistant works within their scope of practice; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; requires regular and prompt attendance; works the assigned schedule including overtime and call as required; maintains expertise; participates in continuing education activities; the Respiratory Therapy Assistant works under the direction of a Respiratory Therapist and requires minimal supervision to safely perform essential duties; utilizes proper body mechanics when: moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety; moving equipment/supplies that is necessary to perform essential functions; accurately performs 12-lead EKGs, signal average EKGs and rhythm strips for patients on general care floors and procedural areas; identifies technique to minimize EKG artifact; maintains an organized workstation, retrieves and appropriately works from patient work-list, processes EKG test results; checks patient armbands using appropriate patient identifiers before each procedure; performs set-up, maintenance and cleaning of EKG machines and various types of respiratory care equipment in order to provide safe patient care, including the following: maintains supply of oxygen cylinders in the respiratory equipment room, all inpatient units, emergency department, clinic and outpatient areas; disinfects equipment prior to calibration and assembly; transports dirty equipment to the RT reprocessing area using appropriate infection control techniques; appropriately handles and uses cleaning and disinfecting solutions and equipment; demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment; reports equipment malfunctions to Respiratory Therapy Supervisor; performs routine cleaning and maintenance of RT equipment bins and cabinets; assists Respiratory Therapist with transport of patients as needed; maintains and stocks appropriate respiratory supplies in the respiratory supply rooms and various respiratory care work areas daily; performs monthly checks on all oxygen cylinders on inpatient units and outpatient crash carts and replaces when needed; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; communicates with co-workers to promote continuity of care and transfer of information; responds to STAT calls ASAP; maintains accurate and complete records by: appropriately accessing patient orders from EKG work-list; transmitting EKG results into electronic medical record in a timely manner; accurately matching EKG results to the correct EKG order and patient record; maintaining cleaning and daily log books and records for EKG and respiratory therapy equipment; accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit; completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; adheres to current infection control and safety precautions; demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations: Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adults and Geriatric; other duties as assigned/required; participates on committees as assigned; participates in Performance Improvement activities through quality metrics.
Qualifications: The minimum training and experience requirements for this classification are high school diploma or equivalent.
Associate or bachelor’s degree in a science field or health related profession, preferred.
One year EKG, telemetry monitoring or other allied health experience, preferred.
