Position: Clinical Counselor
Reports to: Program Director

Function:
The Clinical Counselor is responsible for screening, intake and orientation services, timely and accurate clinical documentation, participation in the interdisciplinary team meeting, conduction and documenting individual and group counseling and psychoeducation.
Qualifications:
The position requires a Master’s degree in licensed social worker (LCSW) that is a certified addiction counselor; two years of experience working with chemically dependent individuals or a licensed professional counselor.
The position requires a proven ability of oral and written communication and counseling theories.
Requires a reasonable combination of the following knowledge and skills: work with addictive personality types; methods to intervene on substance abuse (including the use of cognitive behavioral therapies and twelve step facilitation skills, use of community resource).
Must possess a valid AL driver’s license and continually meet the requirements for VOA Southeast’s vehicle insurance company.
Principal Activities:
Evaluate veterans and create service plans; provide counseling and referrals to community resources and programs; assist veterans with skills to remain sober and cope with stressors; evaluate veteran’s progress and amend recovery plans accordingly.
Counsel and advise individuals with alcohol, tobacco, drug, or other problems, such as gambling and eating disorders.
Complete and maintain accurate records or reports regarding the veteran’s histories and progress, services provided, or other required information.
Intervene as an advocate for veterans to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
Intervene in crisis situations to assist veterans.
Coordinate counseling efforts with mental health professionals or other health professionals, such as doctors, nurses, or social workers.
Participate in case conferences or staff meetings and collaborate with other professionals to assess veteran’s needs.
Assess and evaluate veteran’s mental and physical health, addiction or problem behavior and readiness of counseling.
Help veterans develop goals, skills, and behaviors necessary to recover from their addiction or modify their behavior.
Participate in outreach programs and connecting veterans to resources in the community.
Complete and maintain documentation in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
Schedule and conduct screening, orientation, intake (and/or referral) services for prospective veterans.
Assure that all applicable documentation is completed in a timely and accurate manner.
Plan and implement group and individual counseling for Eagle’s Landing.
Coordinate services with referral agencies to assist veterans what have specific (treatment) needs not addressed by the program.
Establish (in cooperation with the multidisciplinary team) the veterans individualized service plan.
Complete and maintain accurate and timely documentation of veteran’s progress/regression in HMIS.
Maintain on-going educational and life skills group training session as scheduled/necessary covering all aspects of addiction treatment recovery or mental health.
Report any special need and emergency that may arise to the Program Director.
Coordinate/cooperate with the Program Director to assure that maintenance of complete and accurate veterans records are in compliance with VA and CARF standards and guidelines.
Participate in chart auditing and curriculum development for veterans with the assistance of the Program Director.
Maintain Certification and participate in on-going training.
Assist the staff with group education services if an emergency arises.
Participate in the housing needs assessment process, review the VI-SPDAT in Service Point to assist with determining housing needs.
Participate in CoC meeting and staffing.
